Pushups are an excellent body weight exercise, and are not only a great dips substitute, but are a safer alternative to the barbell bench press.
However, just like the dips exercise, pushups should be worked progressively - this means adding resistance, or increasing the exercise intensity. For example, raising your feet will make the traditional pushup more challenging - what else?
Try using resistance bands, or even a weighted vest as you gain in strength.
